City enthusiasts plan trips for total solar eclipse
TOI : PUNE: For those who cannot afford to go to China to witness the total solar eclipse on July 22, various astronomy clubs in the city have arranged trips to Nalanda and Patna in Bihar where the eclipse will be visible for the longest duration four minutes in India.
Astronomy clubs arranging the trips are receiving many enquiries every day for these trips. Also, the fact that perhaps this will be the only chance to witness a total solar eclipse for this generation (the next is slated for 2037), is attracting many.
Speaking to TOI on Sunday, Mayuresh Prabhune, secretary of Khagol Vishawa (KV), an amateur astronomy Club said, “The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has published the names of places in India where the eclipse will be seen. Accordingly, a few cities in Bihar will witness most of the eclipse so most enthusiasts are heading towards Patna, Nalanda, Biharsharif and so on to see the solar eclipse.”
The eclipse will also be visible in cities like Surat, Dhule, Indore and Itarsi, among others. The time of the eclipse is early in the morning. And, since the monsoon reaches Bihar later as compared to cities like Surat, it increases the chances of observing the eclipse.
The tour has been organised by Galaxy Scientist in association with KV between July 19 and 25 and 40 people have already registered with them for the tour. This includes officials from the University of Pune, students, members of other astronomy clubs in the city and sky-lovers.
Gayatri Urankar, who will be heading to Nalanda said, “I am already gearing up for this most awaited tour. I have been reading a lot on the internet, gathering information and trying to find out what can be done when we go to witness the eclipse. It’s going to be a lifetime experience and I’m waiting for the day.”
