TOI : PUNE: Suresh Kalmadi, MP, has appealed to the Congress workers to strengthen the party in Pune district and prepare for the assembly elections.
At a meeting organised to plan a grand finale for the state-wide campaign of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) in Pune, Kalmadi said on Sunday: “There is need to create poll environment in the city. Similar to the Lok Sabha election success, the party should be able to form a stable government in Maharashtra. Now, we have to take responsibility of the district unit along with the city unit.” He added that party workers should work hard for the party candidates in the assembly polls.
The state-wide campaign rally, headed by MPCC president Manikrao Thackeray, will reach Pune district on July 30. After a series of meetings on July 30 and 31 across the district, the rally will conclude in Pune on August 1.
Central ministers from western Maharashtra are likely to attend the rally. Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and MP Rahul Gandhi will also be invited for the concluding function.

TOI : PUNE: As many as 17 students from a prominent boarding school in Panchgani have tested positive for the H1N1 flu, following which all 360 students at the school were screened for the virus on Monday. However, the school will not be shut, the principal affirmed.
Thirty-four students at the school, all aged between 10 and 16, had complained of fever and backache three weeks ago and were given regular flu medicines. They were admitted to the school’s 18-bed hospital on July 23, said Vijaysinh Mohite, Satara district health officer. “The throat swab and nasal samples of all 34 students were sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune the same day,” he added.
The NIV report confirmed the presence of the virus in 17 students. However, since the students were already on medication, all of them, barring two, had fully recovered. The two students who haven’t recovered have been quarantined and are being administered Tamiflu at the school’s hospital.
Mohite said it was likely that one of the infected students may have returned from abroad recently and transmitted the virus to the others. Earlier, 22 students had gone on a study tour to NASA, returning some time in April. “However, it’s been three months since they returned, so the chances of them transmitting the virus now is ruled out,” he added.
The principal of the school told TOI that many boarders had gone out with their parents on the July 18-19 weekend. “There is a possibility that some of the students came in contact with outsiders carrying the virus. Besides, Panchgani is a tourist spot,” he said.
Of the 360 students in the school, 56 are day scholars while the rest are boarders. Among the boarders are 10 non-resident Indian students.
Meanwhile, the school’s interim examinations that were to begin on Tuesday have been postponed. More Stories from this section PUNE-NASHIK RAIL…More

TOI : PUNE: Unhappy with the answers given by the officials of the civic water supply department, the Shiv Sena corporators, who have been demanding withdrawal of the 40 per cent water cut in the city, staged a walk out from the PMC general body meeting on Thursday.
The corporators came down heavily on the administration demanding to know why the water cut was not withdrawn.
Shiv Sena corporators Sham Deshpande and Mahadev Babar questioned why the PMC was not lifting water from the canal though water was being released by the irrigation department.
Pramod Nirbhavne, head of the water supply department, told the GB that the water flowing through canal cannot be lifted because it was turbid. “It is difficult to treat all that water in the water treatment plants. Though we have not officially withdrawn the water cuts, we are supplying up to 85 per cent water. The city is receiving one time water supply everyday.”
Nirbhavne added that normal water supply cannot be restored yet since the dams were not full to capacity.
The Shiv Sena corporators, however, were not satisfied with the answers and walked out of the meet.
During the GB meet, leader of the house Anil Bhosale and NCP corporator Dilip Barate raised the issue of having a comprehensive plan for water supply in the city.
“We need to seriously think over the water supply issue. All of us need to sit together and prepare a plan so that such a problem does not arise in future and there is proper supply 365 days a year,” Bhosale said.
Earlier in the day, mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale performed a puja’ at the Khadakwasla dam as per the annual tradition. “This is not superstition but just a way to respect the nature,” Bhosale said.
