TOI : PUNE: City-based Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) on Saturday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Loughborough University, Leicestershire-UK for research, post graduate and doctoral programmes in automotive engineering.
K C Vora, head of ARAI Academy and Rui Chen, senior lecturer at Loughborough University, are the co-coordinators of this programme.
ARAI Director Shrikant Marathe and Richard Stobart, Head of the Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering Department at Loughborough University, signed the MoU. Marathe said though there are many post-graduate educational institutions in India, not many operate in the field of automotive engineering. Facilities required for automotive R&D are prohibitively expensive which imposes a lot of constraints on several institutions. The success of ARAI’s collaboration with Vellore Institute of Technology has prompted the Association to look into the development of specialised programmes in various fields of automotive technology with leading universities abroad, Marathe said.
“The purpose of this programme is to develop engineers to drive quality and innovation in the automotive industry, which, given both consumer demands and the state of global resources, is increasingly focused on the environment, fuel economy and safety. A collaborative effort combining the joint expertise and influence of ARAI and Loughborough University will succeed in creating engineers capable of meeting the demands of the automotive industry in India and around the world. Additionally, a workforce exposed to different cultures and business practices can only be an asset to employers as global commerce continues to be the norm,” Marathe said.
Stobart said, “The Indian automotive industry is the fastest growing automobile industry in the world. In spite of the current global financial turmoil in developed countries, the industry in India is still enjoying growth, which shows the potential of future further development.”

TOI : PUNE: Appreciating the role of the Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development and Administration (Yashada) as an administrative training institute for the government, chief minister Ashok Chavan said here on Saturday that the state government will examine the possibility of making Yashada a nodal agency to which all state government institutes will be affiliated.
“The Yashada has been recognised at the national level and has brought in international opportunities, like consultancy tie-ups with other countries. Maharashtra is known for being a pioneering state in reforms and we have the best in terms of bureaucracy and governance. There are training modules for different government departments. It is time to integrate them all and make Yashada a nodal agency which will extend affiliation to state government institutes. There is also a need to have training for grass-root functionaries,” he said. Chavan was speaking at the silver jubilee celebration function of Yashada held in the presence of state governor S C Jamir, deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal, state water resources minister Ajit Pawar and director general of Yashada V Ramani.
The CM also highlighted the need for the state government to have training as an integral part of its policy. “We should have a state training policy, wherein every government functionary should undergo 15 days training in three years. The policy should consist of a comprehensive view of training issues,” Chavan said, adding that the state government will extend all financial and moral support to Yashada for its growth.
“We must ensure that 1.5 per cent salary allocation of each government department is earmarked for training purposes and that should go to Yashada. I am told that Yashada is in need for more space. The government will support such requirements, by granting government land,” he said.
Chavan urged Yashada officials to start training programmes to usher in e-governance. “This is the biggest challenge before the state government. We are…More

TOI : PUNE: The Kothrud police on Saturday arrested Gajanan Marne (43) of Shastrinagar in another case where he allegedly opened fire on businessman Sameer Patil of Sangli on May 12.
The police will produce Marne before a court on Sunday to seek police custody remand in the fresh case.
It may be noted that Marne was earlier arrested for allegedly opening fire on criminal Nilesh Ghaywal as a fallout of inter-gang rivalry on June 12. He was taken into custody after he surrendered before the court on June 24.
Following the expiry of his police custody in Ghaywal’s case, Marne and others were produced before judicial magistrate first class G G Itkalkar on Saturday. The suspects were then sent to magisterial custody.
However, inspector Gautam Deshmukh, in-charge of the Kothrud police station, later obtained Marne’s custody in Patil’s case after seeking the court’s permission, said assistant public prosecutor A V Ausekar. The gangster will now be produced before the court on Sunday to obtain his police custody remand in Patil’s case. Meanwhile, some suspects involved in this case are yet to be arrested, Ausekar added.
It may be noted that Patil, his partner and his driver who were travelling in a car escaped with minor injuries after a gang of about seven people opened fire and also attacked the car with sharp weapons at the Bhusari colony near Reliance Fresh on Paud road on May 12.
The Kothrud police have identified Patil’s partner as Rajshekhar Birajdar and driver as Rahul alias Navnath Deokar. The businessman had identified the assailants as Marne, his nephew Bapu Pawar and four to five unidentified people, the police added.
Patil has registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act.

TOI : PUNE: Minister for non-conventional energy sources Vinay Kore on Saturday said that the government is seriously thinking of drafting a law for energy conservation. He said various initiatives will be taken at the school-level pertaining to energy conservation.
Kore was speaking at the 5th state-level award ceremony for excellence in energy conservation and management’, organised by the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA). The awards were distributed by governor S C Jamir.
Kore said that the government is promoting energy efficiency and its conservation. The framing of a separate law would help in better implementation of their initiatives at household level as well as industrial level. The law would also focus on creating awareness among citizens about saving energy, besides promoting renewable energy sources.

It include energy conservation in school curriculum and appointing energy conservators for various fields.” He reiterated the need for conserving energy in view of the massive power shortfall in the state. “We need to reduce the gap between demand and supply. Kore also appealed the industry sector to invest in non-conventional energy projects.
He also said that the initiatives have been taken in state in field of geo-thermal energy, wind energy and co-generation, which are proving as alternate source for power generation.
Jamir said, “To improve the lives of people, we need adequate energy at reasonable cost. Accessibility and affordability are the two crucial factors. The widening gap between supply and demand can be bridged with the help of energy conservation. It is imperative to turn energy conservation efforts into a mass movement.”
