TOI : PUNE: A 19-year-old engineering student allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at her residence on Karve road on Saturday afternoon.
The Kothrud police have identified the deceased as Sayali Damodar Shintre (19), a resident of Motiram Park near Karve statue on Karve road. The incident came to light on Saturday afternoon, when her mother, who had gone to the Collector’s office, returned. Sayali was alone in the house at the time of the incident.
Sub-inspector A D Walimbe of the Kothrud police station said Sayali was a second-year student in an engineering college in Kothrud. She had been in a state of depression ever since her father, who was a professor in the same college, died in December last year, he said.
On Saturday afternoon, Sayali’s mother found her daughter lying near the front door, inside the house. There were severe burn injuries on the body. Sayali was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. “We have filed an case of accidental death in this regard,” Walimbe added.
