Bamboo mission to reach 16 more districts
TOI : PUNE: In a major boost, the state department of social forestry has decided to take the national bamboo mission (NBM) to 16 more districts in the state to encourage the production of this tree.
This was disclosed by Prakash Thosare, director, social forestry, at a function to release an 11-minute film on the bamboo mission on Saturday. The department has, in fact, introduced four lakh seeds of eight different types of bamboo to add an assortment to the varieties already grown in the state.
The film, Bamboo, The Green Gold’, has been made by the department of social forestry and was released by state governor S C Jamir at the Raj Bhavan. The film has been directed by Bharat Rawal, a documentary filmmaker, and talks about the NBM, the immense potential of this type of tree and its contribution to economic growth.
The NBM, launched in Maharashtra in 2007, aims at promoting, developing and disseminating technology to encourage the sector across the country. The body has been training farmers and artisans for the last one year to educate them about the uses of bamboo.
“Bamboo, which is known as the poor man’s timber, is more than that. Today, along with traditional bamboo baskets, it is being used to make furniture and polyhouses. Our aim is to popularise the varied uses of bamboo and develop areas under its cultivation,” said Thosare.
He said, “Only three to four varieties of bamboo are found in Maharashtra and are used to support horticulture crops, in paper mills or for making knickknacks, like baskets. However, its potential is much more than this. We are trying to get in more varieties of seeds. For that, we have bought four lakh seeds of eight different types from various parts of the country.”
