Fleeing fine, 65-year-old drives cop on car bonnet

TOI : PUNE: Although there has not been much rain in and around the city over the last two days, India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials say that conditions for better rainfall exists for the next few days.

As per the IMD’s weather update, a low pressure area is likely to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal till Monday, which will become more marked thereafter. Apart from this, an off-shore trough is likely to persist along the west coast.

Due to these weather conditions, widespread rainfall activity with very heavy showers at a few places is likely to continue along the west coast and Gujarat till Monday evening and then decrease in intensity.

Fairly widespread rains with isolated heavy showers is likely in Central Maharashtra and south Rajasthan as well. The Southeast peninsula and north-eastern states, on the other hand, are likely to see subdued rainfall activity.

“Conditions are favourable for rainfall. A gradual increase could be witnessed during the next two days,” said A B Mazumdar, deputy director general meteorology (DDGM) of the IMD.

Pune and the catchment areas continued to witness weak rainfall activity on Sunday. According to the irrigation department, the Khadakwasla catchment witnessed only 1 mm rainfall throughout the day. Other dam catchments too recorded light showers. Panshet and Varasagon had 8 mm each and Pavana recorded 21mm. 1,104 cusecs of water was discharged from Khadakwala dam throug…More

Fleeing fine, 65-year-old drives cop on car bonnet

TOI : PUNE: Traffic policeman V B Jadhav literally had the ride of his life — and a heart-stopping one at that — after he hung on to the bonnet of a car driven at top speed by a 65-year-old Canada-based NRI, who was trying to escape being fined for wrong parking on M G Road on Sunday morning.

In the chase that ensued through the streets of the Pune cantonment, the car had passersby running helter-skelter even as a couple on a motorcycle was knocked down, sustaining grievous injuries. It took six bullets from a senior police official to finally bring the car to a halt. The belligerent driver, Kamal Jain, has been arrested.

It all started around 11 am when assistant sub-inspector Jadhav saw a Ford Ikon in a no-parking zone near Hotel Aurora Towers. “I got down from my vehicle and was about to put a jammer on the front wheel of the car. Just then, an elderly man ran towards the car, got in behind the wheel and started the vehicle. Before I could even talk to him, he tri…More

Ten students test positive for swine flu in Pune

TOI : PUNE: In an incident that resembled a stunt scene straight from movies, a person drove his car on a city street on Sunday with a traffic constable clinging precariously to the bonnet.

The car was brought to a grinding halt only after gun shots were fired rupturing the speeding vehicle’s tyres.

The car, driven by one Kamal Jain, a Canada-based NRI, had been spotted by the constable in front of a hotel in a no parking zone.

However, when Jain saw the constable near the car, he made his way to the steering wheel and started the vehicle in a jiffy. He did not stop even when the cop, after failing to hold him back, stepped onto the bonnet.

With the constable glued to the windscreen, Jain drove through the Cantonment area at speed beyond 60 km per hour, police said, adding four pedestrians were also injured in the incident.

Around this time DCP Ravindra Sengaonkar happened to be taking that route when he saw the car with a constable on bonnet. He gave a chase and when efforts to stop Jain proved futile, he fired shots from his revolver to puncture tyres.

Jain was then take…More
