TOI : PUNE: Unhappy with the answers given by the officials of the civic water supply department, the Shiv Sena corporators, who have been demanding withdrawal of the 40 per cent water cut in the city, staged a walk out from the PMC general body meeting on Thursday.
The corporators came down heavily on the administration demanding to know why the water cut was not withdrawn.
Shiv Sena corporators Sham Deshpande and Mahadev Babar questioned why the PMC was not lifting water from the canal though water was being released by the irrigation department.
Pramod Nirbhavne, head of the water supply department, told the GB that the water flowing through canal cannot be lifted because it was turbid. “It is difficult to treat all that water in the water treatment plants. Though we have not officially withdrawn the water cuts, we are supplying up to 85 per cent water. The city is receiving one time water supply everyday.”
Nirbhavne added that normal water supply cannot be restored yet since the dams were not full to capacity.
The Shiv Sena corporators, however, were not satisfied with the answers and walked out of the meet.
During the GB meet, leader of the house Anil Bhosale and NCP corporator Dilip Barate raised the issue of having a comprehensive plan for water supply in the city.
“We need to seriously think over the water supply issue. All of us need to sit together and prepare a plan so that such a problem does not arise in future and there is proper supply 365 days a year,” Bhosale said.
Earlier in the day, mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale performed a puja’ at the Khadakwasla dam as per the annual tradition. “This is not superstition but just a way to respect the nature,” Bhosale said. TOI : PUNE: The rush for Std XI admissions at 136 junior colleges in the city and Pimpri-Chinchwad will begin on Friday as the centralised admission process (CAP) committee has released the first list of 48,881 seat allotments here on Thursday.
Nearly 40 per cent of the total 22,383 applicants for the science stream secured a seat at the college of their first preference. Similarly, the first preference allotments for English medium commerce as well as arts streams was 41% and 53%, respectively.
The Std XI classes will commence on July 30 following the three rounds of confirmation of admission at individual colleges against the original and the wait list allotments through the CAP, from July 24 to 29. The CAP committee has advised students to confirm their allotted seats on a priority basis instead of trying their luck with the wait list allotments.
All eyes are now set on the state government’s admission guidelines for those Std X failures in two subjects, who have been extended the allowed-to-keep-term (ATKT) benefit this year.
Deputy director (education) and CAP committee chairman Sunil Magar told reporters on Thursday: “We are expecting the ATKT admission guidelines to be released by the government in a few days. The committee will then take a call on whether to effect the ATKT seat allotment in a centralised manner or let the same happen at the college level.” Much would depend on how many students eventually opt for the ATKT benefit, he added.
The Std XI CAP, a unique model in operation here for the 15th year in succession, started this year on June 27 with the sale and acceptance of application forms at the designated application sale and receipt centres. Admissions to the bi-focal courses under the science stream were effected through table-round system from July 11 to 15. The allotment list for the conventional science, commerce and arts seats was since…More

TOI : PUNE: The emission of strong nitric acid fumes created panic in the Vishrantwadi, Yerawada and Vimannagar areas around midnight on Wednesday, with more than a thousand residents complaining of breathing problems, throat irritation, burning eyes and vomiting.
The fumes were emitted after a pipeline carrying the nitric acid developed a leak in the premises of the High Explosives Factory (HEF) at Khadki.
Speaking to TOI, deputy commissioner of police (zone-IV) Jalindar Supekar said HEF joint general manager V Ramanan has sent the police a letter admitting to the leak in the pipeline carrying the acid. “The fumes spread in the air in the form of a powder. We have taken samples of the powder and sent them for a chemical analysis. We will begin our investigations once we receive the report,” he added.
The HEF authorities have already ordered an internal inquiry into the incident, Supekar said. When contacted, Ramanan said, “Whatever we wanted to say, we have written in the letter given to the police. I don’t want to add anything to that.”
Hundreds of residents of the Vishrantwadi police colony rushed out of their houses around midnight after the white powdery substance entered their homes. A resident of the colony, Mumtaz Shaikh, said that a woman constable attached to the Khadki police station had to be rushed to hospital after complaining of severe irritation. “Most others suffered mild irritation of the skin, eyes and throat,” she added.
Pooja Barge, another resident of the colony, said, “There was a different smell in the air around 8 pm on Wednesday. At 12.30 am, however, the entire area was enveloped with the white powder. My brother and I were alone at home as our father has been admitted to hospital. We experienced throat and eye irritation besides breathing problems. Outside, the powder was deposited on vehicles, trees and on the road.”

TOI : PUNE: With the entire state recording rainfall in excess of the average from July 9 to 15, the monsoon has finally given a reason to cheer for the first time since its onset.
As per meteorological norms, if the actual rainfall is higher by 20% or more, then it is considered excess rainfall for the region. If the difference between the actual rainfall and the normal rainfall is plus or minus 19%, then it is considered as normal.
The India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) weekly rainfall update, compiled on Friday, revealed that all the four regions in the state, including Marathwada, have received excess rainfall during the week ending July 15.
A comparison of the season’s rainfall in the state from June 1 to July 15 showed that Marathwada was the only region in the state which had received deficient rainfall. All other regions namely Vidarbha, madhya Maharashtra and Konkan have got normal rainfall, as per their respective seasonal figures.
During the period July 9 to 15, Marathwada was expected to get 34.3 mm rainfall as per the average, but recorded 50.4 mm rainfall which is 47% more than its average.
Other regions like Vidarbha, madhya Maharashtra and Konkan (which also includes Goa) too followed the same pattern. Rainfall in madhya Maharashtra and the Konkan region was higher by 60 and 62% receptively. Vidarbha has recorded 30% more rainfall, IMD officials said.
According to statistics available with the IMD, Vidarbha normally gets 76.9 mm rainfall during the July 9 to 15 period, but this year it recorded 100.3 mm rainfall. Madhya Maharashtra, which witnesses 54.5 mm rains, has received 87.0 mm, while Konkan (including Goa) that usually records 227.3 mm rainfall, has received 367.7 mm rainfall during the same period this season.
