Improvement plan for one-ways

TOI : PUNE: Taking forward the one-way traffic plan on JM and FC roads, the traffic police department has proposed to regulate flow of buses and heavy vehicles, besides creating additional facilities for pedestrians.

As the one-way plan is here to stay, the traffic department will also be making improvements at two major junctions Shimla office chowk and Sancheti chowk which will help in avoiding haphazard mixing of vehicular traffic on these roads.

Speaking to mediapersons on Friday, deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Manoj Patil said that the improvement plan for JM and FC roads has been discussed with the Pune Municipal Corporation authorities. The plan include demarcation of lanes for buses and heavy vehicles on the left side of the road, marking of lanes and zebra crossings, putting traffic channelisers and putting temporary barricades on both sides of the roads for regulating the movement of pedestrians.

“The work is expected to start in a couple of days and will be completed within 15 days,” Patil said. Initially, the work will be completed from Jhansi Rani chowk (Balgandharva chowk) to Natraj chowk on JM road; and from Good Luck chowk to Dnyaneshwar Paduka chowk on FC road. The parking arrangement on both roads will remain unchanged.

The traffic department has proposed three-metre wide footpahts, pedestrian crossings at every 250 metres and creation of bus-bays. It has also proposed to have continuous railings for pedestrians. These railings will have openings only at pedestrian crossings, bus-stops, or at parking places. Some of the pedestrian crossings will be raised ones. Pedestrian refuges have also been proposed on both roads.

“Completing all these facilities will take time. All these works are to be carried out by the PMC,” Patil said.

Incidentally, the traffic department has not insisted on separate cycle tracks. “The decision has to be taken by the people, depending on the need,” Patil said.
