75-yr-old woman run over by tanker

TOI : PUNE: A 75-year-old woman was run over by a water tanker in Upper Indiranagar on Monday afternoon.

The police have identified the deceased as Kusum Shamrao Pawar, a resident of Upper Indiranagar, Bibvewadi. The Sahakarnagar police have arrested the driver of the tanker, Kishore Raghunath Mhasgude (25) of Kondhwa for rash driving.

A complaint in this regard has been lodged by the deceased’s grandson Sachin Pawar (27). According to police, on Monday afternoon, when Pawar was on her way home, a speeding tanker hit her near Mahesh Sanskritik Bhavan on Kondhwa road. The impact of the mishap was such that Pawar died on the spot. Passers-by nabbed the driver and handed him over to the police.

Sub-inspector C B Mane of Sahakarnagar police station is investigating the case.

UTV to market Harishchandrachi Factory

TOI : PUNE: The UTV Motion Pictures, which has campaigned for films like Rang De Basanti’ and Taare Zameen Par’ at the Oscars, has joined hands with the Paprika Media Private Ltd to distribute the Oscar-nominated biopic Harishchandrachi Factory’ in India as well as abroad. The UTV has shown interest in venturing into production and distribution of Marathi films.

Written and directed by Paresh Mokashi, the biopic Harishchandrachi Factory’ is an account of life and works of Dadasaheb Phalke, referred to as father of Indian cinema. The 90-minute-long movie will be distributed and campaigned by UTV Motion Pictures and Paprika Media in US and will be released in India by December.

With this deal, UTV and Paprika have become co-producers of the movie and will share the revenues. The movie is India’s official entry to the Oscars this time in the foreign film category.

Speaking to TOI, Siddharth Roy Kapur, chief executive officer of UTV Motion Pictures said, “With the experience of campaigning for Oscar nominated Rang De Basanti and Taare Zameen Par, UTV has decided to campaign for Harishchandrachi Factory’, which is the first Marathi film distributed by us.”

The campaigning for Oscars will be a very targeted effort special shows at universities, publishing reviews in dedicated journals and advertisement with an aim to create a buzz about the movie, he added. Kapur denied to disclose how much share the company will have in the revenue generated from the distribution of Harishchandrachi Factory’.

When asked about the release of the movie in December, Kapur said, “Currently there is much crowd for Hindi films right now, which should not affect the release of this movie. UTV is planning to release the movie not only in Maharashtra, but also in metros like Delhi, Kolkata that has a movie watching community interested in regional language cinema,” he said. UoP approves acquisition of 600 online journals for Jaykar library

TOI : PUNE: The management council of the University of Pune (UoP) on Monday approved the purchase of four software packages from the Elsevier Journals firm, which would bring 600 online journals on topics cutting across various faculties, to the varsity’s Jaykar library.

The Amsterdam-headquartered Elsevier ranks among the world’s leading publishers of science and health information serving 30 million scientists, students and health and information professionals worldwide. It has a global scholarly community of 7,000 journal editors, 70,000 editorial board members, 3 lakh reviewers and 6 lakh authors. On an annual basis, the firm publishes 2,000 new journals and as many new books each year.

Speaking to TOI, the university’s officiating vice-chancellor Arun Adsool said, “A budgetory provision of Rs 71 lakh has been made for the purchase of these software packages.” The university has already started work on the technical aspects involved in the acquisition and installation of these softwares, he said.

Adsool added, “The software acquisition would initially enable students from all on-campus PG departments and students reaching the Jayakar library to access the 600 online journals. Later on, we have plans to extend this access to all affiliated colleges and recognised institutions.”

The UoP management further decided to extend a push to the ambitious Triple Connectivity project that envisages an audio, visual and data link between the UoP administration, on-campus departments, affiliated colleges and institutions.

Adsool said, “We are soon assigning a committee to recommend steps for taking the project into Phase III from the existing Phase I and II stages. This would mean expansion of the connectivity network across the UoP area.”

In another key move, the UoP management decided to extend the benefits of the Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule scholarship scheme to girl students from all professional colleges too, starting this academic year.

Flying in a plane was exciting: Child actor

TOI : PUNE: Receiving the national film award for best child artiste was one experience child actor Sharad Goyekar will not forget. Not only because he received the prestigious award at the hands of the President, but also for the opportunity to sit in a plane for the first time.

“I was excited and there was a churning in my stomach, especially because of the loud noise the plane made while taking off. But it was a fun experience,” Goyekar smiled.

The 11-year-old received the award for his work in acclaimed Marathi film Tingya’ at a ceremony in the national capital recently. Addressing the media in the city for the first time after the function, Goyekar recalled his experience: “My aai-baba (adoptive parents Prakash and Priya Patil) and my aai-baba from the village (Yeshwant and Yamuna Goyekar) had accompanied me to New Delhi. I had met the President earlier during the Commonwealth Youth Games, when I had presented her a CD of my film. This time, she said that she loved the movie and also patted my back.”

Goyekar also got the opportunity to meet a number of film personalities at the ceremony, including Sonam Kapoor, Shreya Ghoshal, Shankar Mahadevan, Manna Dey and Jabbar Patel an experience, he said, he cherishes.

“The entire jury of the national awards came up to us and spoke about how they were under pressure from fans of Darsheel Safary, who was also under consideration for his work in another film. But the jury thought that Sharad’s work was all the more commendable because of his background,” Prakash Patil said.

Oseltamivir syrup reaches city market

TOI : PUNE: The city received its first stock of the syrup form of Oseltamivir for private sale across the 12 designated chemists’ shops having schedule X licence from Monday. A consignment of 250 bottles, meant for swine flu infected children below the age of 12 years, has been made available for sale strictly against the prescription of a qualified doctor of allopathy.

“A bottle of 75 ml Fluvir syrup is priced at Rs 520 per bottle,” said Mahendra Pitaliya, chief co-ordinator of Chemists’ Association of Pune District.

Oseltamivir is the generic name of the drug. The brand name of Oseltamivir capsules produced by one pharmaceutical company is known as Tamiflu. The Oseltamivir capsules and syrup the city received now from a Hyderabad-based company are known as Fluvir, said Pitaliya.

Fluvir capsules are available in doses of 35 mg, 45 mg and 75 mg. But the stock that the city has received contain only 75 mg capsules. “Only those patients who are above the age of 12 years can take this capsule. The syrup form of Oseltamivir can be used for children of below 12 years of age,” said Pitaliya.

“The chemists who are selling Fluvir capsules and syrup will have to submit the monthly sales reports to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at the end of each month,” said A.B. Joshi, assistant commissioner (drugs), FDA.

When contacted Chetan Shah, one of the distributors of Fluvir in the city, said: “The pharmaceutical company has communicated a set of guidelines regarding distribution of Fluvir capsules and syrup to avoid indiscriminate use of the drug.” Fluvir tablets and syrup will be given only against the prescription of a qualified doctor of allopathy, Shah added.
