TOI : PUNE: Three important Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) projects have come to a halt, largely because of the civic body’s own apathy.
Work on a bridge parallel to Holkar bridge, a road connecting Sangamwadi bridge to Sadalbaba chowk and the widening of the road opposite BEG, were all undertaken on land passing through army establishments. Six months ago, on March 26, work was called to a halt by army officials since the PMC had failed to honour its commitments.
The army had given permission for the bridge and other projects on the condition that the PMC build a flyover joining its two campuses across the road and a hostel for war widows, to which the PMC had agreed.
Accordingly, the PMC had begun work on the flyover and the hostel until it fell short of funds and tabled a proposal before the GB to divert funds for the works.
Since then, the proposal has been pending before the GB and the administration had to discontinue the works. Army authorities, therefore, asked the PMC to discontinue the bridge construction and road projects until the hostel and flyover work restarted. The proposal was once again postponed for discussion to next month during the GB meeting on Wednesday.
Speaking to TOI, officer-in-charge of special project of the PMC, VR Patil confirmed that the works have come to a halt pending the GB’s decision.
“We were to construct a war widows’ hostel costing Rs 3.5 crore and the flyover worth Rs 12.6 crore. The flyover will, in fact be an advantage for the PMC as the road opposite BEG, below the flyover, will be free of cross traffic trying to go to either of the army campuses on both sides of the road. The standing committee had given approval for the funds, but the proposal got stuck at the GB,” Patil said.

TOI : PUNE: It’s a way of bringing together architects, writers, artists and other creative minds. Pecha Kucha Night (PKN), the brainchild of Klein Dytham Architecture, a Tokyo-based firm, originated in 2003 and is today held in over 240 cities in the world.
In Pune, the first PKN was held on October 23 and had 90 people in attendance.
Twelve individuals from the fields of dance, journalism, architecture, fine arts, poetry and literature met at well-known architect Christopher Charles Benninger’s office. The presentations included a slide show on the evolution of a chair by senior architect Shrikant Nivasarkar, Falguni Gokhale’s journey as an artist; Varsha Gavandi’s interesting facts on Chinese gardens and demonstrations on the finer nuances of classical dance by Kathak dancers Kaveri Agashe and Sheetal Kolwalkar.
Pecha Kucha derives its name from a Japanese term for the sound of conversation ( chitchat’). It will be a regular activity in Pune to help creative people share knowledge. “Very often, creative people don’t get a chance to showcase their talents,” says architecture writer, Darpana Athale, director of Sarvasva Designs, which has initiated the event in Pune. “PKN began as a way to help them get together and communicate. The programme is open to individuals from all walks of life to present anything of interest that they would like to share with others.”
The original creators of PKN began the activity as an informal activity within the office. “Soon after, it received tremendous response. The firm decided to go large-scale and began PKN in other cities. Currently, PKN exists in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi, besides Pune,” says Athale.
“All the presenters have to do is follow a fixed format of presentation. Each presenter gets six minutes and 40 seconds to showcase whatever they want through slide shows, audio-visual presentations, demonstrations and talks. The presentations can be 20 frames of 20 seconds each. This is the Japanese form…More

TOI : PUNE: Rabbi sowing activities in the state have still to get underway in full. So far, 37% of sowing has been carried out across the state. As compared to figures in the same period last year there is a sharp dip in sowing activities. On October 27, 2008, the sowing activity was 58%, say officials in the agriculture department.
According to the officials, the sowing of rabbi crops this season is expected to go up. Kharif crops received a setback in some areas in the state owing to less and unpredictable rain and this would have an impact on the sowing of rabbi crops, they said. The next 15 days are crucial for rabbi sowing and a fall in temperature would be conducive to the sowing of the crops.
Of a total area of 53.66 lakh hectares, sowing has been carried out on 19.66 lakh hectares of land, said the officials. Sowing for jowar is in the last stage at some areas. Nearly 55% of jowar sowing has been completed, while 35% of maze sowing has been undertaken in the state so far.
The largest area of land, 33.74 lakh hectares, has been marked for jowar, followed by chickpea (12.50 lakh hectares) and wheat (10.70 lakh hectares). Around 39% of sowing have been undertaken for foodgrains, while 23% sowing has been completed for oilseeds.
Pune division tops all divisions in the state in rabbi sowing. Around 59% of sowing has been completed in the division so far. More than 20.56 lakh hectares of land has been marked for rabbi sowing.
The other divisions are still to reach the half-way mark in sowing activities. Sowing activities in other divisions are Nashik (20%), Kolhapur (23%), Aurangabad (45%), Latur (17%), Amravati (14%), Nagpur (1%). The Konkan division has yet to start rabbi sowing.
